Oyster Reef Building

Event Chair: Restore Our Shores

DETAILS:

Date: August 12, 2025
Time: 9:00 am to 1:00 pm
Location: Palm Bay, FL (Location will be emailed prior to the event.)

Volunteers will meet at the location provided in an email sent prior to the event. Once there, you will enter the water and use rakes to help level out the oyster shell that has previously been placed in the water. There may also be a need to move coquina rocks (ranging from 5 to 50 pounds each) to help form the reef in the Indian River Lagoon.

This is a water activity and you will be in knee to waist deep water.

It is important to remember, coquina rock can be very heavy and sharp, which may cause damage to your skin or clothes. Due to this, we strongly recommend long pants and long sleeves to keep your skin protected, plus a hat and sunscreen. This is a physically demanding task, involving significant lifting and bending. Wet suits and dive booties will not be provided but you are welcome to bring your own. Closed-toe shoes are mandatory (no flip flops, Crocs, Keens, etc.). Please dress accordingly for the weather. Please also bring with you a towel, water/water bottle (you can refill as needed from the water coolers but please note it is limited), snacks, lunch and whatever else you will need for the day. It has also been advised that any jewelry be removed that can easily get snagged (i.e. rings, bracelets, necklaces).

Please note: Participants must be at least 15 years old, able to work outdoors in full sun during their shift, and capable of lifting approximately 25-50 pounds. Due to the capacity of our boat, no more than 8 people may participate in this specific activity.

A volunteer waiver will be emailed to you prior to the event.
