piles of empty oyster shells used to fill gabions

All of the empty oyster shells used in our oyster gardening and reef building programs come from the dinner table! We encourage restaurants, seafood festivals and shellfish distributors to collect the discarded shells so Restore Our Shores can use them in all aspects of our restoration programs. To date, we’ve collected around 8 million pounds of shell! If you’re a local restaurant interested in joining our Shuck & Share shell recycling team, please contact us at restoreourshores@brevardzoo.org.
