Oyster Reef Building
Event Chair: Restore Our Shores
DETAILS:
Join the ROS team for an exciting reef-building activity! Volunteers will have the chance to ride on our boat to the reef location, get in the water, and help move coquina rocks (ranging from 5 to 50 pounds each) to help form a reef in the Indian River Lagoon.
LOCATION: Melbourne (TBD - address will be sent to you prior to the event)
TIME: 9:00 am to 1:00 pm
This is a water activity and you will be in the water.
Registration is required for all volunteers. Participants must be at least 15 years old, able to work outdoors in full sun during their shift, and capable of lifting approximately 25-30 pounds. Please note that coquina rock can be very heavy and sharp, which may cause damage to your skin or clothes. This is a physically demanding task, involving significant lifting and bending.
We strongly recommend long pants and long sleeves to keep your skin protected, plus a hat and sunscreen. Wet suits and dive booties will not be provided but you are welcome to bring your own. Closed-toe shoes are mandatory (no flip flops, Crocs, Keens, etc.). Please dress accordingly for the weather. Please also bring with you a towel, water/water bottle (you can refill as needed from the water coolers but please note it is limited as we will be on the boat for the entire day), snacks, lunch and whatever else you will need for the day. Also, it's been advised that any jewelry be removed that can easily get snagged (i.e. rings, bracelets, necklaces).
A volunteer waiver will be emailed to you prior to the event.
