Jazzoo Zero-Waste Clean Up Nov 3rd

Event Chair: Restore Our Shores

DETAILS:

A number of bowls full of food

Our upcoming Jazzoo event has a zero waste goal each year. The event hosts more than 1,600 attendees and 30+ food and beverage vendors. Nearly all waste from the event is compostable and recyclable, including everything in the hands of guests that night! Supplying compostable plates, cutlery, and cups eliminates the use of more than 75,000 plastic serviceware items. Through composting and recycling, over two tons of waste is diverted from the landfill for this event.

As you can imagine, pulling off a zero waste event of this magnitude requires extensive planning, logistics… and lots of hands! The day after the event, we sort through the compost to remove any possible contamination, weigh the bags, and load them onto a truck destined for a commercial compost facility in St. Augustine.

If you or anyone you know is willing to help, we can use as many hands as possible.  Believe it or not, we have a lot of fun and it’s not as gross as it sounds!

Volunteers will be helping to weigh composting, recycling, and trash from the previous night's Jazzoo event in order to evaluate our waste diversion efforts and support Brevard Zoo's sustainability programs. Volunteers will additionally be helping to rinse out trash bins, place recyclables and trash in appropriate receptacles and help prep compost for transport. We will be working outside with limited shade, please wear clothes you can get dirty in, close-toed shoes, hat, sunscreen, and a water bottle. Gloves will be provided.

LOCATION:  Brevard Zoo's Nyami Nyami River Lodge.  This maybe inside the lodge or outside the lodge.
